Client Update: We've Made Some Changes

CLIENT UPDATES:

As an important client of the Campus for Communities of the Future, we wanted to let you know we've been tweaking our community building courses in order to remain relevant and practical. We've done it by standing on the shoulders of some amazing change agents across the country, most of whom are clients like yourself who continue to utilize our training and provide valuable feedback.

MULTIPLY, MOBILIZE, and MAXIMIZE: A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE

While it has taken years to simpify the complex process of supporting the transformation that is essential for innovation and sytems change, we ultimately aligned the (1) needed shifts (2) the successes we observed, and (3) the leadership competencies required. This alignment took shape in the form of 3 somewhat organic phases and 3 courses (rather than the previous two). We have described these as 1. Multiply, 2. Mobilize and 3. Maximize.

3 Phases Graphic

As you can see in the table below, each of the 3 phases strengthens a different capacity and has a different impact. These 3 phases are the result of making sure we meet people where they are at by strengthening leadership, promoting community-led development, and then working toward the systemic change that is required for broader transformation.

As one of our clients observed, he - like most of us - had begun to promote change by jumping in at Phase 3 without having the distributed leadership or the foundation of trust and stakeholder ownership that Phase 1 and 2 provide. The result, as he put it, "I couldn't get people to do a darn thing!" He now sees Phase 1 and Phase 2 as the pieces he had been missing.

RURAL COMMUNITY BUILDING

We are grateful for a partnership with the amazing team from RhPAP (Rural Health Professionals Action Plan) who worked with us to co-create a Rural Community Building Course for their provincial team. This course was offered this past spring as a hybrid that combined both on-the-ground and online learning. In addition to influencing our course reorganization, they helped us understand that much of our training is about coaching-the-coaches in order to enhance their competencies for engaging other staff and citizens in the rural communities they serve. A number of Alberta elected officials and government staff also took the course and provided positive feedback that helped promote the value of our training. Read more about the course and how it was received at this link.

FREE WEBINAR

To kick off our training this fall we're offering a FREE WEBINAR on September 23rd at 1:00 EST entitled LEARNINGS FROM LEADERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE. In addition to sharing key learnings and some valuable information and tools, we'll provide an overview of our training. This is a good webinar for those who would like more information before they commit.

INTERESTED IN TRAINING FOR SENIOR LEADERS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS?

We are also working with other trusted colleagues in Canada and the U.S. to co-create training specifically for senior leaders, elected officials, funders and government staff. If that is of interest to you please let us know.

IMPORTANT (AND FREE!) RESOURCES

2. We also wanted to make sure you knew our Community Development Planning Framework and the hundreds of related tools (organized within each of the planning steps) from the printed version of our Toolkit are now available online at this link. We are continuing to add facilitative tools to the library on a regular basis.

That's it for now. Take care.
