Community Building for Rural and Remote Communities provides training and certification for staff, volunteers, or elected officials who want to make a difference and are serving in formal or informal community leadership roles. It is suitable for a variety of organizations, committees, networks, businesses, and sectors e.g. health, social services, economic development, education, justice, libraries, elected officials, recreation, agricultural, arts, co-operatives, environment, faith communities etc.
It will be especially relevant for those who are working with other stakeholders to address complex issues and are committed to facilitating the social innovation and transformation needed for their organizations and communities.
Upon completion of this certificate, participants will be better able to:
- serve as a catalyst for positive community change and growth;
- engage citizens and partner stakeholders by applying a community development approach, and;
- demonstrate personal growth as a community leader.
The Campus for Communities is grateful to RhPAP (Alberta's Rural Health Professions Action Plan) for the direction and knowledge they have provided in terms of helping to develop this course. Their understanding of the issues and opportuniies their varied stakeholders face in terms of living in rural and remote communities has proven invaluable.
Learning Options and Cost:
- 7 modules (1.5 hours each)
- can be taken via online webinars at a cost of $50 for each webinar (optional testing and certification is an additional $150)
- in Alberta, face to face workshops may also be an option
Note: No worries if you can't make all dates as the webinars are recorded and available for you to view on your own time.
Interactive webinars are 1.5 hours in length and generally run for 7 consecutive weeks. If the participant chooses to pursue the optional testing and certification, each module wiil also have either a background reading and quiz OR a practical assignment related to each participant's community building initiative. This combination of quizzes and assignments would add an additional two hours per module.
Testing and Certification:
Four of the seven webinars have a background reading (the equivalent of a book chapter) that ideally would be read before the online class. This ensures a readiness for online discussion and peer to peer learning. For the remaining 3 webinars there is a practical assignment that provides an opportunity for the learning to be applied to a group or committee the participant is supporting as a community builder. Live participation in all of the webinars is recommended however, participants will also have access to each webinar recording and can review it at their convenience.

If the intent of community development is to see stronger, healthier, and thriving individuals and communities, it cannot happen without change.
