Evidence suggests that community planning initiatives are more successful when initiated and built from strengths and successes rather than from a needs perspective.

The viewpoint of a 'glass of water half full' rather than one that is half empty reminds participants that even if the situation looks bleak, there is always much to celebrate.

This emphasis on strengths and successes, sometimes referred to as assets, means planning begins from a positive perspective. As such it empowers participants, builds trust and relationships and, perhaps more importantly, reinforces the concept that the 'wisdom is within'.
