Description

It is essential for community development practitioners to have an understanding of marketing and branding as it applies to specific organizations and initiatives as well as to achieving specific behavioral goals for "social good”. It is also becoming increasingly evident that marketing can be viewed as a vehicle for encouraging connection, cooperation, and community engagement rather than competition. This session will provide an understanding of these concepts as well as examples and specific tools and resources that can be applied.

Brenda Herchmer

Brenda Herchmer is a passionate community builder with an eclectic background in government, community, academic, and business settings. The owner and Principal Collaborator of Campus for Communities as well as a consulting firm called Grassroots Enterprises, her primary focus is simplifying complex change for aspiring community leaders through the provision of practical coaching, speaking, tools, and training (online and on the ground).

Brenda is an avid blogger, author of three books, and was acknowledged as a YWCA Woman of Distinction in Training and Education. In 2016 she was also awarded the Brock University Distinguished Graduate Award for the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, and in 2017 was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society.

Recently she served as the director of ACE Communities – a $6 million initiative of Alberta Recreation and Parks Association - which was responsible for facilitating planning initiatives to improve quality of life and economic development in over 60 rural Alberta communities. Many of the learnings from this initiative helped shape the Campus for Communities.

Previously Brenda has worked for the City of Niagara Falls, in non-profit settings, and was a full time professor at Niagara College where she also founded and managed the Niagara Centre for Community Leadership. The Centre was acknowledged by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges as an “exemplary practice in community development” and was a finalist for the prestigious national Peter F. Drucker Innovation Award.

Although Brenda and her family lived for a period in Alberta they have returned to their roots in Niagara and live and work in Welland, Ontario where they also own a board game cafe called the Leisure Loft and an online kite and kiteboarding store called Horizon Kites.
